Confirmed. Call to paint Thursday, July 2, Guilford Green.

Within an hour of the email posting, I received two responses.  We have a group to paint.   :-)

We'll be painting on the Guilford Green and having lunch at the Food Center Marketplace cafe.

Hope to see you there.

Call to paint this Thursday (July 2) in Guilford?

Joan suggested I go ahead and post a paint out.

Anyone interested in painting this Thursday?  I'd like to take advantage of the still tolerable temperatures before we get too hot the following week.

We need to be local so I thought about the Guilford green where we could eat at the remodeled Guilford Food Center which now includes a cafe.

OR we could paint at the Guilford docks and have lobster rolls at the Little Stone House annex on the patio.

You see I'm coupling food with a paint out.  Happy July 4th!

Any takers?

Let me know.

Squeeze It In

Greetings to All,

So you're feeling the press of too much to do and wondering where to cut? Don't discount our little Hyland House show.  I think I can say we have had sales from this show every year, and often several sales. Yes, receiving is pretty close to the holiday weekend, but if you can't make receiving day, contact me, and we can make arrangements. And it's not necessary that you attend the opening reception. We will have a good contingent of exhibitors to chat with the non-artists.

This year, anything goes for subject matter. So rummage around in your inventory and pull out a few paintings for the show. You'll help to create a nice diverse exhibit that shows the range of art being created by CTSA artists. And yes, if you've been out painting with us, your artwork is good enough to show.  We've seen it all, and there's no one who paints with us who doesn't have a nice painting or two that would look nice in the mix.

Again, please let me know if you plan to participate and how many paintings you will bring, so that we can plan for easels. And if you can lend an easel or two, that would be nice also. I've heard from some of you, but I know there are more of you out there who should be showing.

I'm hoping to hear from you.

Call for Artists - Castle Arts Festival

Greetings to All,

On the CTSA blog, we received an open invitation to artists from Cheri Miller Weymann of Bill Miller's Castle in Branford. This event venue is planning a one-day arts festival for Sunday, August 9th - (10 AM to 5 PM).  For artists who have their own tents, there will be outside space at a cost of $25 for a 10'x10' space. Others may have space inside the building at a cost of $35. Those showing inside will need to bring their own lighting, as inside lighting is very minimal. Each inside artist will be allowed to plug in one (byo) extension cord.

Bill Miller's says they have an email list of many thousands, as well as a healthy Facebook following. They will advertise on their website under Public Events and on Whofish, Guidezilla, and many local news outlets.  They will place a banner on their high visibility Route 1 frontage, and the tent activity will be obvious from the street.

Their inside bar with drinks and light snacks will be open all day, and they will provide free glasses of water. They may have an outside food truck.

Vendor reservations must be made by August 1.  If you are interested, contact Cheri Weymann at (203) 481-6153 or cherimiller@billmillerscastle.com.

I asked Hull s Art Supply in New Haven for 6 water color sets for 12 girls at the new watercolor class @ Circle of EK C in West Virginia.   Steve C gave me 8 sets.

I asked my Thurs morning painting group Connecticut Shoreline Artists - CTSA for a dozen old water color brushes. They gave me 41 including 9 new ones!

Neck Road Boat Ramp

Greetings to All,

Finally we broke twelve. On our 12th outing of the season, with no weather cancellations so far.

We had two Jays, Veronica, Betsey, Patty, Julia, Judy, Denise, Sally, Hans, Keiko, and me. And -  ooops -- Ed M., whose name Jay had given me a couple of weeks ago, but who I don't know yet, would make 13. But I didn't realize he was there. He must have slipped in late and Jay noticed him only as we were leaving. There had been several other people who came through during the morning, but I can't believe I missed a painter!  Ed, please come and find me when you arrive next time!

Sally was the early-bird, already set up and ready to paint when I arrived around 8:30. The no-see-ums were swarming and hungry until the breeze came up. Then the breeze was a little spunky, blowing over a few easels and scudding used paper towel blotters. We had to position a car to block the wind when we did our wrap-up.

It was a sparkling morning, with a few high clouds creeping in late. It was all water-media today but not all watercolor, with three painters working in acrylics.  Judy and Betsey were just off their Landgrove Inn workshop with Ted Nuttal, and Judy was already anticipating returning for some more Landgrove coddling and another dose of Alvaro Castagnet. Patty and Veronica were still in Don Andrews mode from their recent workshop at Falmouth.

The two large osprey nests both were still occupied, signifying that they both have chicks.  My camera spotted at least three chicks with their heads up on the larger nest.

Again, we had two lunch contingents with the larger one staying for byo and a few heading for Cilantro's.

Next week, I had Essex Steam Railroad on our schedule, but everyone I spoke with was already committed for holiday activities, so I think it's better to just take a week's break. I know I can use the extra time. So our next paint-out will be July 9 at Birbarie Marine in Branford.

Have a great and safe holiday.

Clarification - Neck Road Boat Ramp area

Greetings to All,

Tomorrow’s paint-out is at the Neck Road Boat Ramp area.  I thought Circle Beach was just another way of identifying it, but Jay says that’s a different thing. Sorry for the confusion. If you have not painted there before, see the directions on the blog.

Weather still looks OK.

Until then.

Clarification on Hyland House Show

Just to be clear -- the art show is simply part of the entertainment package for people who will buy tickets for the fund-raiser. The paintings we show are not considered donations, and if you sell a painting, all of the proceeds go to you. You can decide what to do with them. Of course, if you decide to donate to HH part of your proceeds from a sale, that will be most appreciated. But whether you donate and if so, how much, is totally your choice.

Annual CTSA Hyland House Exhibit

Greetings to All,

The Hyland House Show has been scheduled for July 10 through August 2, with Receiving on July 7, 10 AM to Noon, and with an opening reception on July 10 from 6 to 8 PM.

Any artist who has painted with CTSA during the past two years, either on location or in our studio sessions at Dudley Farm or at the Community Center, may exhibit up to four paintings.  There are no guidelines for subject matter, and you may exhibit any painting that you have created, whether or not it was done at a CTSA outing or whether you have shown it at Hyland House in the past.

There will be no entry fees, and no commission is required from any sales.

The July 10th opening reception will be a catered affair with wine and beer, which will be a fund-raiser for Hyland House.  Exhibiting artists are invited guests (FREE).

Take down will be August 4 from 10 to Noon.

Please remember that this is not a typical art show, where paintings are hung on the walls. Instead, we exhibit the paintings on easels and on a small non-used stairway by propping them up with non-skid tabs to keep them in place. We take great care to place them where they will be safe from accidental breakage, but perhaps the chances of a mishap are slightly higher than in the usual display situation.

Please let me know - handschuj2@gmail.com -  if you intend to participate and with how many paintings, so that we can estimate our need for easels.

Whether or not you plan to exhibit, perhaps you would be willing to lend us an easel or two for the show. If so, please contact Sandy directly - sandrawiens@aol.com.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Florence Griswold Museum - June 2015

Greetings to All,

We were only six - Patty, Veronica, Rosemary, Tina, Terry, and me. Except for Tina, we were all from the formative CTSA group from 2010. I hope all you bus trip people enjoyed your visit to the Clarke Museum. We-six had a fine morning at Flo Gris, where we had pretty good light and a cool little breeze. We even enjoyed a bit of sun late in the morning.

I made several mistakes, in addition to the scheduling of this outing on the day of the bus trip. First, I neglected to check my batteries to be sure I had at least one that was fully charged. Then I got carried away with my macro-flower shooting. So by the time I got around the back rose garden and back to the main garden, I had just a few shots left before my battery went dead. That's when I discovered that the other two batteries in my sack also were exhausted. And I had not even decided where I would paint yet.

Finally, I settled down and painted. At Noon, Veronica tapped me on the shoulder.  When I went to pull out my lunch, I discovered I had packed only a jug of iced tea and some cherries, and I had put the plastic bin that had my lunch in it back in the refrigerator before I left home.  But the cherries and tea were plenty...

Sometimes a battery will revive a bit if you let it rest a while. So I put that battery back in and shot one pic of all our paintings. Then I shut off the camera and lined us up for a timed group shot.  When that went OK, I decided to keep shooting, and I was able to get all of the individual paintings, plus a few more. At 1:30, I left Veronica who had stayed to work some more on her painting.

Next Thursday, I have us scheduled for Neck Road/Circle Beach, near the boat ramp, on the Madison side of Grass Island.  Directions are posted on the blog. We should have a falling tide through the morning, with the low just after noon.  Think - how to paint beautiful mud?
