Chaffinch Island July 30

All I can say is we lucked out!  It was a beautiful day at Chaffinch.  When I arrived a little before 9, Denise was already set up in THE coolest and breeziest spot on the peninsula.  I chose to paint from there also, situating myself for a different perspective.

Everyone else spread out over the hill facing more eastern views.  I know the two oil painters may not have finished their work before we had the wrap-up, especially Isabel who was still painting when we left after lunch.

We had 10 artists today:  Jay, Tom, Ed, Denise, Patty, Betsey, Ann, Phyllis, Isabelle, and me.

The Annual Stony Creek juried art show featuring paintings of Stony Creek is receiving Friday, July 31, 5-7 PM.  See list on the the right and click on the announcement for details.  (Hope this post gets sent out to the email list in time.)

Next Thursday's venue is Stony Creek.  There are two gazebos for shade, one at the end of the dock area and the other by the beach.

Paint out update Chaffinch Island July 30

Latest forecast shows that the morning will be clear with slighter lower temps than Wednesday and a stiff breeze.  It might be worth a try!  Maybe I'll see someone there.

?? Chaffinch Island July 30

The forecast continues to include showers and a thunderstorm for Thursday.  There is no shelter at Chaffinch Island to hide from the rain.  Use your best judgment but to me it looks like it will not be a good day for plein air painting unless it is done from the interior of your car or tailgate.

Call to Paint Chaffinch Island July 30

I hope you managed to see the posting for last week's paint out.  Between Joan's and my frequent postings, it could have easily been overlooked.  You had to scroll down in the email to find it or click on the bolded blue title in the email which would take you to the blog where you could scroll down to find it.  Usually the email for the paint out appears the following day with just the name of the venue as title.  Soooo, if you missed it, just scroll down in this email and you'll find it.  OR, as I said, you can get better looks at the pics in the blog—just click on the bolded blue title for the post and it'll bring you to the blog.  Sorry for being repetitive but I know many of you are not familiar with how the postings work for the blog and how to access it from the email.

The Madison Art Society plein air group is also painting at Chaffinch Island this week, on Wednesday.  Both days are forecast hot and humid with possible showers on Thursday.

Chaffinch Island is a lovely little peninsula with views of rocks, water, marsh, coastlines in the distance, and plenty of shade, AND plenty of things to paint.

If anyone goes to paint on Thursday, feel free to take some pictures.  And if you want I can post them along with any summary you may wish to provide, or not.  I will try to get there but the heat and humidity are often too much for me.

Extended forecast for the following week is looking better for the Stony Creek paint out.  The only shade at Stony Creek is the gazebo but maybe an umbrella with slightly cooler temps would work just as well.

Directions to Chaffinch Island:

From  I-95 take exit 58 (Route 77). Turn south onto Route 77  (Church Street) and continue for approximately 0.8 mile to the center of Guilford. Turn right (west) onto Broad Street, and then take a quick left (south) onto Whitfield Street, driving along the west side of the Guilford Town Green. At the south end of the green, turn right (west) onto Route 146 (Water Street) and travel approximately 1 mile, taking care to stay on 146 at the intersection of Jacobs Lane. Go by a marsh area and then a few homes, and turn left onto Mulberry Point Road. Go over the railroad bridge and south on Mulberry Point Road for approximately 0.5 mile. Turn left onto Chaffinch Island Road. Take care, this turn is a bit hard to see. Travel approximately 0.7 mile to the end of Chaffinch Island Road where Chaffinch Island Park is located. You will find plentiful parking, and there are portable toilets on site.

We had a full house, 19 painters! It certainly is the most I've ever seen at this paint out over the past four years (or is it five?).  It's because Mercy Center is one of the most beautiful locations on the shoreline to paint.  It has almost every subject, as you will see by the variety of paintings with all mediums.

Isabel, Ed, Rich, Sharon, Joan McP, Anne, Jay, Betsey, Denise, Cheryl, Judy, Jeannette, Pat, Sandy, Keiko, Phyllis, Julia, Tina, and I enjoyed an incredibly beautiful summer day.  No humidity. Those of us who painted in the shade were treated to cool sea breezes.  And at lunch, we were actually chilled! Mid-July and goosebumps—what a combination!

The marketing director walked around and took photos of us painting.  I thanked her for letting us come and she said that they are thrilled to have us.  After our somewhat boisterous lunch, let's hope that remains the case.

The extended forecast for next week is 90's and humid.  Next week's paint out was originally scheduled for the Guilford Docks but there's not much shade there.  Since many of us prefer shady areas, I'm thinking that Chaffinch Island would be a better location.  At Chaffinch Island, there's lots of shade and there might be a breeze off the Sound.  I'll post the call to paint on Monday with directions.

Ooops.

Here's the correct link for the JSE petition, in case you didn't already find it. Sorry, I picked up the wrong one and didn't double check it to be sure it worked.

Mercy Center

I posted this last Thursday but I don't think people saw it.  The email doesn't go out till the next day and if there's two postings, then only the last posting appears in the email.  You have to click on the bolded title in blue in the email to be sent to the blog where you can scroll down to see earlier posts.
