Call to Paint -- Tuesday, 18 June, 2013 -- 8 AM --

Florence Griswold Museum, Old Lyme

Greetings to All,

So far, Tuesday morning is looking OK, and perhaps better earlier. We have been cleared to begin as early as 8 AM, but the museum and bathrooms do not open until 10.

In the past, the guidelines have allowed us to paint under cover, in case of light rain showers, with the proviso that we lay down drop cloths. I noted, however, that they now specifically say painters should not paint on the stone veranda. If it looks showery, however, you might want to bring a drop cloth, just in case... In any case, Cafe Flo will need to set up on the verandah in advance of their 11 AM opening time, so plan to not set up there.

Please park in the lot at the southeast side of the property. Enter at the main driveway, go by the main museum building, and then wrap all the way around the S-Curve driveway to the lot near the Chadwick Studio. You might want to drop your gear near the area where you expect to paint, before parking.

Assuming the weather holds, plan to bring your lunch and a chair, and we can relax and extend our visit to this delightful spot by the Lieutenant River, while we peruse our work of the morning. If you forget to bring lunch, I’m pretty sure you still can pick up some take-out at CafĂ© Flo.

If you wish to stay and visit the museum after our lunch, admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors; free for members. The current exhibit is called Animal/Vegetable/Mineral: An Artist’s Guide to the World. They say it includes some of the best-known works from the Museum’s permanent collection displayed alongside recent works by contemporary artists. The exhibition takes both its name and organizing principle from a children’s game that presumes the whole of the world can be neatly divided into three categories—the animal, the vegetable, and the mineral.

Directions below.

I hope to see you there.

John Singer Sargent Exhibit -- Seeking to share it

I received the following note from Martha W. If you don't have Martha's email address, you can express your interest by leaving a comment on this posting, or check with me to get her contact info.

I am looking for someone(s) who did not go down to the Brooklyn Museum on June 12 and might be interested in going down on July 11 or 18 (Thursdays).

I am happy to drive….it’s a long trip down, but between the John Singer Sargent(s) which end in July and Judy Chicago’s “Dinner Party,” it should be a wonderful day. Sketch books a good idea for the Judy Chicago.

Watercolor Demo

Cheryl sent me this announcement for a watercolor demo this Friday. Some of us visited Lyme Senior Center when Lou Bonamarte did a demo there. They had coffee and a little something sweet to share. The space is cozy, and the group pleasant. And it's hard to beat the price!

Watercolor Demo at Lymes Senior Center, Town Woods Road, Old Lyme

14 June 2013 at 9:30 a.m.

Cost: $5

Everyone welcome!

Greetings to All,

Nine optimists ignored the deluge of the night before and the misty start to the day and pulled up in front of Hyland House on Tuesday -- Terry, Keiko, Jay, Sally, Kay, Patty, Tina, Betsey, and I. Sandy came late, just to bring us the details on our upcoming Hyland House exhibit (more to follow).

By the time we arrived, the rain was over unless you painted under a tree, as I did.  But when you use watercolor paints, you need water, right? So I just kept adding paint here and there and moving it around, and I let the tree add the water to keep my painting wet and loose. Everyone else appears to have had the good sense to get out from under the trees. But that method of painting was really a lot of fun.

While most of us pulled out our reds and greens, three went against the grain and either looked the other way or went black and white. Either way, we all had a fine time, and before you knew it, the sun came out, and the time had come to wrap things up.

Next week we paint at the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme.
