Recap -- Florence Griswold Museum -- 18 June 2013

Greetings to All,

First, let me apologize for being so late with this post. Again, too many irons in the fire, but part of my excuse is that I went out to paint at Chaffinch I. with Jay's group on Wednesday, and I went up to Lyme to see the Hudson Valley exhibit at LAA yesterday. Both excuses well worth the delay for me. My third excuse is that I shot too many photos, and it took a long time to wade through them all.

Tuesday was close to perfect for our annual paint-out at the Flo-Gris. We had 15 painters -- Kaleigh, Veronica, Cheryl, Terry B and Rosemary all out for the first time this season, new member Cindy Taylor and Cheryl's friend Ellen from Lyme out with us for the first time, Bob VanM, Betsey, Kay, Terry E, Jay, Keiko, Patty, and me. Boy, this time of year, keeping track of everyone gets dicey.

Flo-Gris was beautiful as usual. Many of us who have painted along the waterside in past years decided to focus on the gardens this time. That's always pleasant, even if your painting flops. Veronica actually finished up a painting that she started there two years ago - let's see, I think that was our first paint-out there.

I think a few painters stayed for a byo picnic. I had planned to do that, but Bob was ill, so I headed home. (He is fine now, but it took a few days.)

If you have not yet seen the Hudson Valley exhibit, which opened yesterday, you might want to put that on your calendar. It is showing at Lyme Art Association until July 28. There are many extraordinary paintings, including a masterful still life by Eileen, whose work is immediately recognizable. But you will also recognize the work of other nationally known artists. You will find a number of fine watercolors in the mix, as well as some interesting sculpture.Take a close look at the Siegmund and Sieglinde sculpture in the rear gallery. It's more than pretty faces.

Call to Paint -- Tuesday, 18 June, 2013 -- 8 AM --

Florence Griswold Museum, Old Lyme

Greetings to All,

So far, Tuesday morning is looking OK, and perhaps better earlier. We have been cleared to begin as early as 8 AM, but the museum and bathrooms do not open until 10.

In the past, the guidelines have allowed us to paint under cover, in case of light rain showers, with the proviso that we lay down drop cloths. I noted, however, that they now specifically say painters should not paint on the stone veranda. If it looks showery, however, you might want to bring a drop cloth, just in case... In any case, Cafe Flo will need to set up on the verandah in advance of their 11 AM opening time, so plan to not set up there.

Please park in the lot at the southeast side of the property. Enter at the main driveway, go by the main museum building, and then wrap all the way around the S-Curve driveway to the lot near the Chadwick Studio. You might want to drop your gear near the area where you expect to paint, before parking.

Assuming the weather holds, plan to bring your lunch and a chair, and we can relax and extend our visit to this delightful spot by the Lieutenant River, while we peruse our work of the morning. If you forget to bring lunch, I’m pretty sure you still can pick up some take-out at CafĂ© Flo.

If you wish to stay and visit the museum after our lunch, admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors; free for members. The current exhibit is called Animal/Vegetable/Mineral: An Artist’s Guide to the World. They say it includes some of the best-known works from the Museum’s permanent collection displayed alongside recent works by contemporary artists. The exhibition takes both its name and organizing principle from a children’s game that presumes the whole of the world can be neatly divided into three categories—the animal, the vegetable, and the mineral.

Directions below.

I hope to see you there.

John Singer Sargent Exhibit -- Seeking to share it

I received the following note from Martha W. If you don't have Martha's email address, you can express your interest by leaving a comment on this posting, or check with me to get her contact info.

I am looking for someone(s) who did not go down to the Brooklyn Museum on June 12 and might be interested in going down on July 11 or 18 (Thursdays).

I am happy to drive….it’s a long trip down, but between the John Singer Sargent(s) which end in July and Judy Chicago’s “Dinner Party,” it should be a wonderful day. Sketch books a good idea for the Judy Chicago.

Watercolor Demo

Cheryl sent me this announcement for a watercolor demo this Friday. Some of us visited Lyme Senior Center when Lou Bonamarte did a demo there. They had coffee and a little something sweet to share. The space is cozy, and the group pleasant. And it's hard to beat the price!
