CAS Wet Paint Sale -- CORRECTION
I misunderstood the CAS announcement of this event. The paint-out and sale is for CAS members only. Thanks to Jay for catching me... /j
Two Saturday Plein Air Events
CAS Wet Paint Sale/Paint-Out
Clinton Art Society invites artists to join them to paint out during Clinton's 350th Anniversary events on Saturday, August 31, 2013. As you can see, you should not expect to park in the Town Hall parking lot. Also, you should expect even more traffic issues than usual in getting into and out of town, and do not expect to leave early. Aside from these caveats, it looks like fun.
Down By The Riverside
Again this year, the Riverside Park Conservancy in New London invites artists to paint at their 18-acre Riverside Park during their festival on Saturday, September 7, 2013, with a subsequent exhibit of artists' paintings at New London's Union Station, and an opening reception for that exhibit on Saturday October 19, 2013. The paint-out event includes complimentary water and lunch for participating artists. To register, YOU NEED TO SIGN UP BY EMAIL at mrsj@snet.net BY AUGUST 30 -- For more information and directions: www.riversideparkconservancy.org or info@riversideparkconservancy.org.
Let's go as a group --
If you intend to participate in either of these events, please either leave a comment on this post or contact me by email. I know that two CTSA members participated in the Riverside paint-out last year, and several people already have expressed interest in the September 7th event. I have directions.

I'll be there on Monday morning from 10 to noon at the Hyland House Museum to help take down the show (it is a lovely show, for those of you who haven't yet seen it).
The Hyland House is a very special place, a comfortable house as it was in the late seventeenth century, with charming period furnishings. You can imagine the life of the family that lived there as the docent takes you through the house and describes details of who they were.
See you on Monday.

Hyland House Exhibit Pick Up
If you've not yet seen the Hyland House exhibit and you want to, you have just a few more days. The last day to view the show is this Sunday. The house will be open for visitors Friday and Saturday 11-4 and Sunday Noon - 4.
If you are an exhibitor, please remember to pick up your paintings on Monday, August 12 between 10 AM and Noon. Kay and Gretchen, that does not apply to you. I am picking up for you. Terry, you said maybe you needed help with pickup. Let me know for sure. If anyone else has a conflict and is not able to pick up, please ask someone to hold your paintings for you. If you donated easels and are not able to pick up, please inform either Sandy or me.
Exhibitors, if you have not already paid your Hyland House membership dues for this year, please do that at or before our take-down. This show is a mutual benefit event -- Hyland House provides for us a very nice reception and the opportunity to show (and perhaps sell) our work, and we support a museum on a shoestring budget with our membership fees and a little extra added attraction for museum visitors. I know we did sell several paintings.
Thanks to all who made this a successful event.

Big Sale at Jerry's West Hartford
Finally, the back to school sale has begun at Jerry's in West Hartford. I had mentioned it to a few folks as I thought it started August 1 but it is starting now. Here's the link to the catalog for what's on sale.

Henry Whitfield Museum -- 6 August 2013
We were eight again -- but a different 8 -- Hans, Keiko, Marge, Betsey, Jay, Patty, Silvia - for her first time this season - and me. Hans was the early-bird, as he had to leave early. The rest of us got a slower start. It was interesting to see how the different aspects of this subject changed as the sun moved through the morning. When Hans and I started around 8 AM, the only interesting angle was from the northwest. But by mid-morning, you could find angles and light and shadow everywhere. This has to be the one site that is better later.
We wondered what has become of all our Tuesday painters from past years! By August, I expected we would be creeping back up into the 20's of painters, and I wondered whether the group might get unwieldy as we combined the original group with all the new people who have begun to paint regularly. Instead, we have not so many of either category. The question is -- should we stay with our Thursday time frame throughout the season, rather than going to Tuesdays for the summer. The Thursday group had been consistent and growing. If the Tuesday participants are not coming on Tuesdays, perhaps Thursday would be as good or better. What do you think?
I have switched around our schedule a little for the next two weeks, largely because it suited my personal schedule, I confess. Next Tuesday, we will paint at Mercy Center in Madison. The following two weeks, I hope I might be on vacation. Perhaps there might be some boating involved... We'll see. I have scheduled Branford Green for the 20th, and we are confirmed for Medad Tavern for the 27th.
In September, we are back to Thursdays instead of Tuesdays. For Labor Day week, I have left our Thursday schedule open, as I was thinking we might send a small contingent to participate in the September 8th (Saturday) "Down by the Riverside" paint-out in New London. If you might be interested in doing that, please leave a comment on this post.

Call to Paint -- Tuesday, 6 August 2013 -- 7:30 AM -- Henry Whitfield State Museum
So far, Tuesday is looking pretty good weather-wise. This will be our first time painting at this site as CTSA. This paint-out is especially timely, as the
museum is planning an art exhibit which will be mounted some time in the
spring, with the idea to have it remain in place, I believe, through or at
least well into the summer of 2014. Those details will be available later. Our job now is just to paint.
The museum is not open on Tuesdays, so bathrooms will not be available. Sorry...
I will be away now until sometime on Monday. If you need to be in touch, you could call or text me -- 203-641-7427.
Directions below. I hope to see you there.
